Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno held a press conference Wednesday against the backdrop of a large Associated Building Wreckers excavator crushing and removing charred debris from the burned out remains of the mill building at 34 Front St. in the Indian Orchard Mills complex.
The mill was hit by a suspicious fire in 2010 and destroyed by another suspicious fire in 2011. And on Thursday, it was finally being demolished.
According to Sarno, it took years to find the owner of the building and subsequent time in court for the city to take the building at a cost of $107,325 so as to finish the process of cleaning up the site.
Environmental Reporting and Monitoring was completed by Cardno/ATC of West Springfield.
